Off-line version
of the prospectus
"It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern
methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity
of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation,
stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wrack &
ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment
of seeing & searching can be promoted by means of coercion &
a sense of duty.
To the contrary, I believe that it would be possible to rob even a healthy
beast of prey of its voraciousness, if
it were possible, with the aid of a whip, to force the beast to devour
continuously, even when not hungry, especially if the food, handed out
under such coercion, were to be selected accordingly."

Overview
the
blue crane college
for art, science and ecological studies
The Blue Crane is a new college, but not
in its philosophy or structure, which is an amalgamation of diverse,
tried and tested pedagogic methodology.
There are recognisable aspects originating
from Summerhill
School, Dartington
Hall School, Sands
School, Sudbury
Valley School and many other progressive and democratic educational
institutions, foundations and writings.
The Blue Crane is neither attempting to
copy any particular model nor better them, it has its own direction
and purpose. It will however add to the small choice of available progressive,
democratic and residential education establishments.
The Blue Crane is not specifically there
for the very young, but is looking to provide a place for the teenager
who wishes to further educate him or herself free from the constraints
of traditional systems and teaching mentality.
The college is founded on the following
basic principles:
-
Democratic
-
Non coercive
-
Residential
-
Multi-cultural
-
Ecologically aware
-
Self sustaining
Situated near East London, Eastern Cape,
South Africa, the college occupies a private estate comprising 22 hectares
of idyllic coastal and riverside land that will be developed and maintained
using best ecological and self sustaining practice.
There is no fixed dogma or curricula
attached to the Blue Crane. It is a centre for secondary, tertiary and
lifelong learning and a place where one can study areas for which there
are no existing recognised qualifications (such as it was ICT 20 years
ago), or where one can study for existing qualifications in any given
subject.
The Blue Crane will use state of the art
communication systems to maintain and develop relationships with global
academic and practical science institutions.
The
Blue Crane Open Source Development Centre.
A
project to develop Open Source and Linux programs for schools and distance
learning.
